As a rehabilitation therapist, I’ve played many roles for my clients and their loved ones:
Comforter
Coach 🥇
Friend
Bartender…okay it’s typically a juice box 🧃, maybe nectar thick, and a side a pudding with some adaptive utensil or device…just feels like a bartender when the client, their communication switch or sign is prompting me “more” “more”
Cheerleader 📣
And obviously skilled clinician
However in many ways, rehab therapists feel like we function as a motivational-tour-guide 🗺️ of sorts. There is a journey ahead—for some it is short and for some it is very long. Our job is to orient you along the way, to rally your supporters and your confidence, and help you to experience the day to day moments we call everyday life through two ways: teaching you to learn/relearn skills to participate, savor, and embrace daily moments and/or to use strategies/tools/equipment to accommodate and do those daily moments in a different way.
We ask you to join us in prayer as the Lord, our family and friends, and dedicated staff across the country work to being all the little pieces together to bring her Home.
Currently we are waiting for insurance authorization for and a medical review of Joy’s chart by staff at Allina Health’s Abbott Hospital in their Courage Kenny Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit. This is a 2-3 week hospital admission for intensive rehab therapy for OT, PT, and Speech as well as other services available. I was able to speak directly with a woman by the name of Wendy, in admissions and later, her manager Rachel. Both of them were extremely compassionate and eager to help facilitate Joy’s admission process. There have been some complications along the way, so the extra work put forward by these two women has been extraordinary and such a godsend. I am naming them both here in hopes that we can bless them both through grateful prayer.
Previously, Courage Kenny in Golden Valley had been mentioned. This is a different type of program that is more similar to what is called a transitional care unit or TCU. This option isn’t fully off the table but especially at her current state, may not be the best level of care compared to the inpatient unit mentioned above. Both will be considered side by side, however, we were also informed Courage’s specific TCU like program usually has a wait list as it is a very unique program for a TCU. Additionally, her Medicare plan will likely not pay for both the inpatient unit and this TCU level of care. Please pray specific for wisdom and clarity as we learn more next week.
Monday is the tentative day when insurance authorization and physician review will be occurring. For those that are able, please join us especially on Monday praying in real time for those who are working on these tasks.
Once we can see that she is clearly “taking the next steps” on the road ahead, I will share what comes next in her rehab journey. Please feel free to direct any rehabilitation related questions my way.
All My Love ❤️🩹
