A New Phase

Updated: Aug 21, 2024

Good morning and thank you for your ongoing support and faithful prayers for Joy and your compassion and encouragement shown our family. Joy had a more restful night and they kept her hand in a mitt so she wouldn’t pull her trach if confused. She greeted me with smiles this morning.

We are definitely in a new phase in Joy’s recovery and I pray that it is a positive phase with her brain “waking up,” but it can be anguishing at times as well. Joy will transition from what appears to be a deep slumber, to peaceful wakefulness with smiles, to a worried furrowed brow shaking head back and forth, to anxious questioning of where we are, how we got here, how long we’ll be here, why can’t we go home, and more. I guess one positive that has come out of this is that I’m becoming much more adept at reading her lips. The staff have universally shared that Joy’s behaviors are consistent with recovering from a brain injury, but knowing something is “normal” is still difficult to watch when happening to your loved one.

In addition to coveting your continued prayers for miraculous healing of Joy’s brain tissue and function, along with healing for her many other physical injuries, please pray for wisdom and favor for us as we work to achieve the best next step for Joy’s care, including the potential for a “sooner than later” transition back to Minnesota. There are many questions to be answered both from a medical and insurance standpoint, so we definitely need your prayers for supernatural wisdom in navigating next steps in Joy’s care.

Please also continue to pray for the cranioplasty itself scheduled for Monday. We are so thankful it can finally occur, but the seriousness and complexity of the operation warrant earnest prayer for a safe and uneventful procedure and a rapid recovery from the surgery itself.

Once again, we thank you again from the bottom of our hearts.
