Hello, dear friends and family. Today was Mom's first full day in the long-term acute care (LTAC) hospital after transferring late last night, as Dad mentioned this morning. Because it was her first day there, it ended up being a day of assessments of her therapy needs and goals. The general plan is to get her up twice a day for a couple of hours of therapy per day. Today, however, we discussed with her nurse and decided that because she had been through so many transitions in the last couple of days (ICU to PCU to LTAC), and because she was clearly exhausted today, we opted out of having her in the "chair" for a couple of hours today. (Physical therapy did come this morning and get her sitting up on the edge of the bed for a little while with her helmet on.) Therapy starts in earnest tomorrow!
We did learn today that Mom has been diagnosed with both pneumonia and bacteremia. She is on an antibiotic for both and the medical staff are monitoring her closely to make sure she gets any additional care she may need for those as well. Both Dad and I were very pleased with the staff at this facility, just as we were in the ICU and PCU—they've been attentive and helpful in answering any questions we've had. We're hopeful that after her day of rest today and the more intensive therapy provided at this facility going forward that she'll continue to make positive progress.
We continue to be so, so grateful for the support you have all shown us here on CaringBridge, in reaching out personally, and through contributing to and sharing the GoFundMe. I do not have adequate words to express how much it means to all of us to have so many people from so many different spheres of our lives rallying around Mom. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
